47TH ANNUAL  UTAH ALL-STATE HIGH SCHOOL ART SHOW

February 9, 2019-March 22, 2019

Thank you to all the students who entered the 47th Annual Utah All-State High School Art Show and thank you to all teachers for submitting your students' work. The jurors were impressed with the students' innovation, creativity, and thoughtfulness. They had a very difficult time narrowing the 1016 entries down to the 337 works that were accepted, and as always, wished they could accept more works than the show can accommodate. Thank you for sharing your work with us. We know it is vulnerable to enter a show like this and encourage you all to keep making great work and entering shows!

Teachers, as a reminder, work not accepted for exhibition can be picked up starting Tuesday February 12th. We can accommodate art pickups Tuesday-Friday 10am-5pm. No staff will be available to assist with art pickups on Saturday March 30th. If you need to come outside this window please make an appointment by emailing hbarrett@springville.org.

  • Original Artwork: Developed from personal experience, imagination, and direct observation; from multiple personal photographs or sketches. Please include copies of any personal photographs or sketches used during the creation process on the back of your submitted artwork.
  • Adapted Concept: Artwork developed from other sources using multiple elements or photographs with personal interpretation to create a new perception.  We require the use of two or more images for each adapted work.  Each source material must be identified on the entry and the entry card, and an image or copy of the actual source must be included.
  • Copy Work: Artwork that is directly copied from one source without original or creative adaptations is not allowed in this exhibition.

Open to Utah public and private high school students in grades 11 and 12.  Works must be submitted by the high school art department (not individual students).  Each student may be represented with up to two pieces which meet the specifications of original or adapted concepts (see above).

Entry cards and source images must be filled out and attached to the back of the work before the work is brought to the Museum.

Jury Groups

This exhibition is a juried exhibition, or in other words 12 Jurors with experience and understanding of high school art are selected to represent various media categories. Jurors will select works to be accepted in the exhibition as well as the award winners.

We are excited about this year's jury groups:

Drawing: Cassandra Barney, Robert Barrett, Jean Irwin

Painting: Rob Adamson, Katrina Berg, Al Rounds

Photography/Digital: Megan Geilman, Joshua Rose, Eric Boothe

3D: David LeCheminant, Tara Carpenter, Fletcher Booth

Last year's Juror group statements can be accessed here.

Artwork Delivery & Pickup

Artwork should be delivered to the Springville Museum of Art, January 23-26, 2019, 10am-5pm. Works not accepted into the show may be picked up by teachers Tuesday-Friday 10am-5pm after February 9, 2019.  All work may be picked up from the Museum from Saturday, March 23 - Friday March 29, 2019 during Museum hours. No artwork accepted for exhibition will be released from the Museum before March 23, 2019*. Failure to pick up work by Friday March 29, 2019 may result in the reduction of bonus entries the following year for the school. No staff will be available to assist with art pickups on Saturday March 30th. If students would like to pick up their own artwork they need to make an appointment with museum staff by emailing hbarrett@springville.org.

*Students who need artwork for a Sterling Scholar interview must contact the Museum at least one week in advance to schedule art pickup. Artwork can only be removed from the Museum for a 24-hour period - please plan accordingly. Email elarsen@springville.org with any questions.

Award Opportunities

Various awards (some with cash prizes) are presented to selected students in the exhibition. An invitation is extended to all high school students, teachers, and friends to attend the awards ceremony at the Springville Museum of Art on the day of the Opening, Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 10:00am. A public Opening Reception will follow directly after from 11:00 am to 1:00pm. Additionally, some award winners will be invited to attend a special day of recognition at the Utah State Capitol Building in February 2019 – Please watch www.smofa.org for more information about this event.

For information on the specifics of the Congressional awards, click here. Please note that to be considered for the 1st place award, artworks must be no larger than 26" by 26" and no deeper than 4''.

Traveling Show

The Utah Division of Arts and Museums will sponsor a traveling exhibition selected from, and immediately following, the Springville show. It will travel during the 2018-2019 school year to museums, galleries, libraries, and schools throughout Utah. The Division of Arts and Museums will provide honoraria to student artists selected for the Traveling Show. Two dimensional works should be covered with Plexiglas. The artwork will be selected by the Visual Art Committee of the Division of Arts and Museums. If you would like your work to be considered for this exhibition, please indicate so on your entry paperwork.

Visiting the Exhibition

All school groups planning to visit this exhibition must call and schedule in advance. We are able to accommodate a limited number of students in one day, and reservations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Schools that do not schedule their visit in advance may not be able to visit the full exhibition. Please call Anne Totten at 801-491-5700 as soon as possible to ensure you are able to visit on your desired date.

A limited amount of funding is available to assist schools in transporting their students to and from the exhibition. More information about accessing can be found here.

Selling your Artwork

This exhibition provides students with an opportunity to sell their artwork. Students interested in listing their art for sale should work with their teachers to determine a price for their artwork. Please take into consideration the cost of materials (including the frame), the time invested into making the artwork, and the Museum's 30% commission.
