ELIGIBILITY

This show is open to all current and previous Utah residents. Quilts will be pre-selected by a committee of expert quilters from the following criteria:

1.  Quilts must be made using good construction techniques.

2.  Quilts must be clean.

3.  Quilts must be no longer than 120”.

4.  Quilts must have two layers of fabric with a batting sandwiched in between, with either machine or hand quilting.

5.  Two quilts may be submitted which have not been previously entered into this show and are not more than three years old.

6.  No kits, neither full nor partial.

7.  A label must be sewn on the back bottom of the quilt with name of quilt, name of entrant, and/or who quilted it, and date completed.

8.  A hanging sleeve (see diagram) must be attached to the back of the quilt. We do not want to damage your quilt with tacks. (This sleeve is unique to this show).

Step 1—Cut a 5” strip of fabric whose length is the width of quilt top, fold it in half, press, draw a pencil line 2” below the fold.

Step 2—Lay top of fold along top of quilt just below the binding, baste with large stitches along the pencil line making sure that the basting stitches do not show on the front of the quilt. No other stitching is required. (Top and ends of hanging sleeve must be loose -- not sewn to the quilt.)

**Quilts not properly prepared for hanging following the eligibility criteria listed will be disqualified.**

AWARDS

Quality in workmanship, design, color, originality, and general appeal will be the principal criteria applied by the selection committee for admission to the show. The same criteria will also be used by the judges. There will be awards for “Best of Show”, “Best Hand Quilting,” as well as many other awards.

JUDGING

The Annual Springville Museum of Art Quilt Show is a juried competition.  Quilts are screened by a panel of experts before they are displayed in the show.  After the panel qualifies the quilts, they will be displayed and the quilts will be judged for ribbons/awards by qualified judges. Each quilt participating in the exhibition will receive critique feedback from the judges.

46th Annual Quilt Show Judges:

Kristin Barrus

I am thrilled to be a quilter in today's exciting Quilt World and here in Utah. I lean toward Modern styles, but appreciate a variety of traditions. For seven years I co-led the Utah County Modern Quilt Group. I enjoy teaching classes and retreats and learning from others. Because of the years I've spent in quilt making, I have noticed the power that quilts bring to the individual, as well as in a group setting. Creating with fabric heals wounds and deepens relationships. The very fact that quilts wrap and warm is the basis of their longevity in our country. This has led me to pursue my Master's in Material Culture & Textile History at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I learn so much from their professors and the International Quilt Study Center & Museum. We stand on the shoulders of giants. My thesis is studying QuiltCon, the Modern Quilt Guild's annual convention. It is truly an honor to be involved in the Springville Quilt Show this year.

Brenda Bell

I enjoy the designing, the piecing, the quilting, the teaching and the giving of quilt making. In 2003 I started to get interested in quilting. My interests started with my love of machine embroidery. After embroidering everything I could find, I decided to combine embroidery with quilt making. I enjoy digitizing original embroidery designs that can complement the fabrics used in a quilt. Several of my challenge competition quilts showcase my original embroidery designs and have won competition ribbons. Pictures of two of my quilts have been published; one in a magazine and one in a book by Charlotte Warr Andersen.

I have served as President of three different quilt guilds, Area Rep for Salt Lake North, and as Secretary of the Utah Quilt Guild. I have worked for 12 years on the HMQS committee focusing on quilt competition and as judging coordinator. In 2016 I was invited to observe the judging room at Road to California which further increased my knowledge on judging protocol and procedure. I admire originality and creativity of quilters, and quilts displaying originality are all winners to me. In making a quilt, don’t be afraid to do something that makes that quilt your own. Think of it as a Quilt Reflection: Your creative quilt canvas that reflects you.

Thank you for inviting me to return as a judge for the 2019 Springville Quilt Show.

Deonn Stott

Deonn’s love for quilting began at age eight as she helped tie her very first quilt. She spent many hours in the sewing room with the women in her family, and eventually her own triplet daughters. Now an accomplished quilt maker, pattern designer, quilt coach and teacher, it is Deonn's personal quest to discover and share time- and budget-saving tips that simplify the process of quilt-making, especially for “newbies”. For over 20 years, Deonn has had opportunities to judge fairs and quilt shows around the state including the Utah State Fair. She has served on the board of HMQS, and now UQSM, since 2008, assisting in the judging room and serving as scribe for national judges. Deonn received Utah Quilt Guild accreditation as a quilt show judge in 2011. In addition to operating her longarm quilting business, Quiltscapes, Deonn has been featured in a series of How-To-Quilt/How-To-Sew tutorials and videos for Riley Blake Designs and QNNtv’s “Quilt It!”. Her designs have been published in Quilt Trends and Quiltmaker magazines. Deonn enjoys singing in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, loves to travel, and to hang out with her family in the kitchen and especially the sewing room.
